The Boys’ Brigade

From the Mitcham Youth Handbook of 1949

In 1883, before any uniformed youth organisations existed, the Boys’ Brigade was started in Glasgow, and, growing steadily, has spread round the world. Al-though the oldest organisation, the B.B. is still pioneering, and its up-to-date training methods go hand in hand with a fine tradition. The weekly programme built up round the Bible Class and Drill Parade, is composed of attractive and interesting activities, and most companies have bugle bands, gymnasiums and clubrooms. Camping also has its place and Companies spend a week or more each summer under canvas by the sea or in the country. Football and cricket teams, athletics, cycling, swim-ming and cross-country running are among the sports organised in the B.B., and Mitcham companies are well represented in the battalion competitions and events.

In a B.B. Company there is opportunity for a boy to obtain a good all-round training to develop in him the best in spirit, mind and body, and added to that he can enjoy a fine spirit of comradeship, which is the outcome of all working together for something worth while.
